We invite you to come and join our family at First Lutheran. Established in 1866, this unique country church has stood for over 125 years as a testament to the faith of those who have worshiped here. The peaceful country setting will attract you, but the warmth of the people will keep you coming back.

Orientation Information

Who are we at First Lutheran?
  • We are people of diverse faith backgrounds, gathered around Word Sacraments.
  • We confess a unity in Christ, and mutually support one another in our walk of Faith.
  • We are catholic, that is a universal church, part of a global Christian church.

We are Lutheran, part of the Evangelic Lutheran Church in America (ELCA):
  • Founded by Martin Luther (1483-1546) as a result of a Reformation, a reform movement within the Roman Catholic Church.
  • This Reformation movement expanded, first in Germany, then Europe and Scandinavia.
  • Lutherans traveled to the Americas; St. Augustine, Florida 1564, Hudson Bay, 1619.
  • Many of the first established Lutheran churches in the United States maintained their ethnic language: Danish Lutherans, Swedish Lutherans, Norwegian Lutherans and German Lutherans to name a few.
  • These emigrants slowly formed Synods: groups of churches cooperating for wider ministry and support, eventually forming the ELCA predecessor bodies, American Lutheran Church (ALC), the Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELC), and the Lutheran Church in America (LCA). These merged in 1987 to form the largest Lutheran denomination in the United States, the ELCA.

ELCA Lutherans are comprised of:
11,000 congregations.
8 seminaries.
29 colleges and universities.
400+ missionaries in 49 countries.
1/3 of the nursing home beds in the nation through affiliated nursing homes.
Fourth largest non-profit service network in the nation through LSS.
Associated with Lutheran World Relief.
A member of the Lutheran World Federation and the World Council of Churches.

The ELCA office is in Chicago near O'Hare Airport. Detailed information about the ELCA organization and divisions is available at the church office or you can visit them online at www.elca.org to find out more about the ELCA.

We are in the Southwestern Iowa Synod.
Rev. Michael Burk is our Bishop. The Synod office is in Iowa City. Phone number is (319)-338-1273. A Synod Assembly is held each year in April with delegates elected from each congregation at their annual meetings. A Church-Wide Assembly is held in August every two years with delegates being nominated by congregations, and elected a year in advance at Synod Assemblies. Resolution for actions by the Synod or by the ELCA may come from any congregation, through its members and council, voted on at their annual or special meetings.
